Bone Marrow Transplantation

Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT), also known as stem cell transplantation, is a critical treatment for a variety of hematologic diseases, including leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and non-malignant conditions like aplastic anemia. The procedure involves replacing a patient's diseased or damaged bone marrow with healthy stem cells, which are capable of producing new blood cells. The transplanted stem cells can come from the patient’s own body (autologous transplant) or from a matched donor (allogeneic transplant). Autologous transplants are commonly used in diseases like multiple myeloma or lymphoma, while allogeneic transplants are typically reserved for diseases such as acute leukemia or myelodysplastic syndromes. Bone marrow transplantation is typically preceded by high-dose chemotherapy or radiation therapy, which is used to destroy the patient’s existing marrow and prepare the body to accept the new stem cells. The engraftment process, where the transplanted stem cells begin to grow and produce new blood cells, can take weeks to months, and during this period, patients are at high risk for infections and other complications. Post-transplant care is crucial and includes infection control, immunosuppressive therapy to prevent graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in allogeneic transplants, and regular monitoring of blood counts and organ function.

What is a Bone Marrow Transplantation?

While BMT can be a life-saving procedure, it comes with risks, including graft rejection, GVHD, and infection. The success of the procedure depends on factors such as the patient’s age, overall health, the disease being treated, and the quality of the stem cell match. Advances in transplantation techniques and supportive care have significantly improved outcomes, making BMT a cornerstone treatment for hematologic malignancies and certain non-cancerous blood disorders. Despite its complexities, BMT offers patients the possibility of long-term remission or cure, especially for those with high-risk or refractory blood cancers.

Dr. Arijit Bishnu and his team use advanced diagnostics, such as genetic testing and molecular profiling, to determine whether targeted therapy is right for a patient. Treatment is then closely monitored and adjusted based on response and tolerance :
Medical History Review: Understanding your symptoms, lifestyle, and medical history to assess any underlying conditions that may be contributing to the menstrual issues.

Treatment of specific blood cancers - Used in conditions such as chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), certain lymphomas, and myeloproliferative neoplasms.

Molecular targeting - Focuses on proteins, genes, or cellular pathways that drive abnormal blood cell growth or survival.

Genetic testing required -Requires molecular diagnostics to identify the presence of targetable mutations or markers.

Fewer side effects than chemotherapy - Typically spares normal cells, leading to lower risk of hair loss, nausea, or widespread immune suppression.

Key advancement in personalized medicine - Allows hematologists to match treatment to each patient’s unique disease profile for optimal outcomes.
